Blockchain technology provides ample opportunities to modernize basically any industry. The implementation of blockchain solutions allows businesses to optimize and speed up work processes, as well as ensure data reliability and security.

In the first part of the article we have covered blockchain use examples in supply chains, financial sector, medicine, and energy.

Today we will describe 12 examples of blockchain projects in such industries as:

Insurance

Automation of insurance claims management

Blockchain solutions powered by smart contracts help to optimize insurance claims management. The system tracks the insured event occurrence and automatically makes payment with no need for additional verification.

Insurewave is an automated blockchain-based marine insurance platform developed by EY and Guardtime. The platform monitors information from GPS and IoT devices and uses this data to automatically calculate the terms of the insurance policy and the amount of the insurance claim.

P2P insurance

P2P is a type of insurance in which a group of policyholders pools their capital and independently manages insurance payments. The basic idea behind P2P is that a group of associates merge their insurance policies, which gives them a sense of control, trust, transparency and reduces costs at the same time.

Decentralized architecture and transparency of the blockchain technology makes it suitable for P2P insurance solutions. All members can access a shared single database with all transaction records related to their total capital and insurance settlements, which significantly increases trust among a group participants.

The Nexus Mutual is a mutual insurance project that insures users against errors in the smart contracts code that can lead to financial loss, product delivery delays, and etc. The project uses Ethereum blockchain and empowers people to share risk together without having to turn to an insurance company.

Risks preventions

Blockchain-based insurance solutions can significantly reduce the risks associated with insurance fraud, human errors or negligence, which most often arise due to a large number of participants in the chain. Transparency and immutability of data increases the security of all insurance processes.

The Piprate blockchain platform is designed to ensure the secure exchange of data between participants in the insurance industry. Piprate provides participants with secure blockchain-enabled wallets that contain a list of all data artifacts, for example, confirmation of incurred claims, available to its owner. Wallets can easily be integrated with existing back-end systems through a secure API. As soon as the data is transferred, the conditions of this operation are recorded in the distributed ledger for complete transparency.

Environment protection

Transparent supply chains

Decentralized utilities management

Blockchain technology allows you to optimize the distributed management of such resources as various energy resources, water and others. Access to transparent, real-time data on resource consumption and quality can aid conservation, dynamic pricing and trading, and identify bottlenecks.

The WePower platform was created to trade renewable energy. The goal of the project is to help renewable energy producers attract investment through a platform where energy suppliers can list lots, and buyers can place bids and purchase them with platform tokens.

Recycling promotion

Blockchain technology allows to develop systems that can stimulate various consumer behaviors, such as recycling, through reward systems.

The Plastic Bank project provides users with financial rewards in a token form in exchange for storing and handing over recyclable waste collected in the ocean, such as plastic containers, cans or bottles. Tokens can be exchanged for various goods like food, water, and etc.at local stores.

Natural resources management

Conversion to using transparent and secure blockchain solutions to manage natural resources will facilitate data tracking, monitoring and managing and help to preserve nature, biodiversity and protect the environment.

The Earth Bank of Codes project is an open global and shared blockchain platform where natural resources, as well as the rights and obligations associated with these resources are registered, so that the researches can be provided with a database containing detailed information about these resources, like their origin or transfer.

Logistics

Delivery quality and efficiency control

Blockchain platforms that collect and process IoT devices data provide logistics process participants with effective tools for controlling the cargo and the transportation. By equipping vehicles, containers, cargo, etc. with various sensors that determine factors affecting the quality of the transported goods, allows you to provide a high-level quality control of the supplied products.

Blockchain solutions can help to store such data in a secure place, which helps to avoid manipulation of data coming from devices. And real-time tracking allows you to take measures in time and avoid damage or loss of the cargo.

The Modum company has developed the MODSense monitoring solution that allows you to monitor the condition of goods at any stage of the supply chain. MODSense is a device that monitors temperature and sends data to the Ethereum blockchain and MODsense One web app, which is accessible for users from anywhere.

GPS tracking of shipments

GPS tracking of vehicle location has already become a common practice in the logistics area. Additional blockchain solutions implementation can bring tracking efficiency to a new level. Real-time tracking and recording location data in the blockchain allows for immediate reaction for any deviations from the route. Also, blockchain systems provide a reliable basis for the stored data analysis, thanks to the information credibility.

Telecommunications

Invoicing

Blockchain solutions can assist in enabling billing automation as well as in providing secure storage for the telecom industry.

Telecommunications service provider Syniverse has partnered with IBM to develop the Universal Commerce blockchain platform for invoicing and processing payments. The solution encrypts all transactions and creates a unified and transparent database of records, which increases workflow speed, trust and security, and simplifies auditing.

Roaming

User identification

The blockchain technology introduction can significantly reduce fraud in the telecommunications sector, as well as optimize the management of user identification processes through instant and automated smart contract solutions. The distributed ledger can become the basis for solutions that provide services for data and user identity storage and verification.

The Indian Telecommunications Regulatory Agency has issued a decree describing the transition of Indian telecom companies to use blockchain technology to store subscribers' permission to provide information services to them. This solution should help with the high volume of spam calls encountered by Indian subscribers.
